Softball Endures Setback Against Keene State

KEENE, N.H. – The Vermont State University Castleton softball team engaged in a low-scoring contest with Keene State on Friday, suffering a 2-0 loss to the Owls.

Brianna Belisle was impressive at the dish with two hits, including a double, and drew a walk. Samera Rideout also logged a two-bagger as Taylor Russell extended her on-base streak to 11 games on a single. Battery-mates Madison Gould and Masson Billert rounded out the Spartan (10-12, 1-5 LEC) offense with one hit apiece.

In the circle, Gould tossed a six-inning complete game and tied her career high in strikeouts with nine while allowing five hits and two walks.

Keene State (5-21, 1-7 LEC) picked up its first Little East Conference triumph in the victory behind well-timed hitting and defense. RBI singles in the second and fourth innings off the bat of Kalle Halvorsen to plate Abbie Monkevicz and Morgan Rodrigues made the difference. Starting hurler Carissa Miller stranded seven runners during her four innings of work, fanning four. In addition to recording a knock, Lilah Demmy limited the Spartans to one hit and surrendered no walks in the last three frames to earn the save.

VTSU Castleton returns home tomorrow (April 20) to tangle with Eastern Connecticut State in a twinbill beginning at 1 p.m.
