CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton softball team was held off the scoreboard by UMass Boston, 1-0 and 6-0, in Tuesday's Little East Conference series at Spartan Field.
Brianna Belisle collected the squad's lone game-one knock and stole her fourth base of the year. Taylor Russell had the Spartans' (9-10, 1-4 LEC) two hits in the second matchup after reaching via HBP in the first.
The opener featured a pitchers' duel starring Madison Gould who made nine Beacons (20-6, 6-2 LEC) whiff in a one-run complete game. Trista DeLong started the finale, punching out a season-high seven hitters with one walk in four frames. Katie Gallagher tossed the fifth and sixth innings in which she stranded five runners aboard as Alexis Rogers took the reins for the seventh, fanning three of her five hitters.
UMass Boston received a solid all-around performance from Bri Melchionda as the senior hurled a one-hitter in the circle and combined for four hits at the dish. Jacqueline Cherry also went the distance, striking out five while allowing two Spartan hits in the second duel. Hailey Krockta went 2-for-3 in the first contest with a double that scored Haley Tilberry's game-winning run. Lauren Miner played a key role in the Beacons' game-two win, hammering two doubles to plate four runs.
The Spartans are back on their home diamond tomorrow (April 17) for a twinbill with Plattsburgh State. First pitch against the Cardinals is scheduled for 3 p.m.
