CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's tennis team fell one set short of its first Little East Conference victory Tuesday, yielding its matchup with UMass Boston, 5-4, at the Castleton Tennis Courts.

Despite a top-flight doubles loss, the Spartans' (4-4, 0-4 LEC) third tandem of Stanley Andersen/Christian Giannone nabbed an 8-2 win to break even. Jason Lipscomb/Khiem Nguyen clipped UMass Boston's (3-2, 1-1 LEC) Thomas Tran/Guillerme Ozoros in a tough, 8-6 match to enter singles with the lead.

Giannone and Andersen prevailed in straight sets at the fifth and sixth singles spots, respectively, while the Beacons tallied points in the top two flights. At the No. 4 slot, Lipscomb and Thomas Tran went to a third stanza after Lipscomb's bounce-back second-set win; Tran emerged victorious, tying it up with one match to go. Connor Davis and Guillerme Ozoros traded successful sets before the third which came down to the wire. Using a 7-3 tiebreaker favoring Ozoros, UMass Boston secured the 5-4 league victory.

The Spartans are back at home tomorrow (April 17) to challenge Colby-Sawyer in non-conference action. First serve is slated for 4 p.m.
