CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's tennis team ran up against a robust Colby-Sawyer squad in non-conference play Wednesday afternoon, taking a 9-0 loss to the Chargers.
The Spartans (4-5) were suppressed in doubles action as Colby-Sawyer (10-10) managed 8-0 wins in the top two spots. Riding recent momentum, Stanley Andersen and Christian Giannone hung with CSC's Matthew Gaudioso and Leonardo Russo at the third flight but fell short, 8-4.
Holding the Spartans to two games or fewer at the top four singles slots, the Chargers dashed to an early clinch. Andersen refused to surrender a bagel in sixth-flight action in a 6-1, 6-2 setback to Markiss Rankins. Flight No. 5 featured Giannone and Gaudioso engaged in another tight battle, but Gaudioso came away with a pair of 6-4 sets to conclude proceedings.
VTSU Castleton is back in action on the road at Southern Maine on Saturday, April 20 for a pivotal Little East Conference match. First serve is set for noon.
