Baseball Holds Off Wells' Late Comeback With 8-7 Victory

AURORA, N.Y. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball defeated Wells College Wednesday afternoon, 8-7.

The Spartans (3-20) got back into the win column with an 8-7 victory over Wells College (14-9). Luke Russell claimed his first victory of the season, posting six strikeouts, zero walks, five hits, and one run in five innings.

With runners in scoring position, VTSU Castleton opened the scoring in the second inning after an error was made by Wells that allowed Brandon Ramirez (2-4) to reach home. Mikey Raby Jr. (2-4) connected on an RBI single to bring Jared Cafasso (0-2) home to give Castleton a 2-0 lead.

The Spartans kept the ball rolling with four hits in the third inning. With runners in scoring position again, Ramirez put a single (1-5) towards right field that brought in Jackson Cardozo (3-5) to score and advanced Alex Bingham to third. Raby Jr. added two more RBIs to his day with a double that sent the runners home and extended Castleton's lead to five.

Dylan Helder set up the Spartans in the sixth inning by getting on base after being hit by a pitch and then stealing second to get into scoring position. Tyler McLain (1-4) sent Helder home with an RBI single to boost Castleton's lead. Cardozo extended the Spartans lead with a two-run homer to put the score at 8-1. This was Cardozo's second home run of the season the sixth of his career.

Owen Phelps and Kevin Hewlett saw action on the mound, combining for 2.2 innings of play with six runs, eight hits, one strikeout, and one walk.

Wells weren't out of the game yet, as the Express' knocked four hits and brought in three runs in the seventh and two more runs in the eighth to only trail by one from the Spartans.

The Spartans went to Sam Crawford in the bottom of the eighth to help extinguish the Express' momentum. He struck out the final batter to keep the Spartans lead heading into the ninth inning. Crawford allowed the first batter to reach base on a single, but wouldn't let Wells get anywhere after that. A fielder's choice at second and a double play concluded the game to give Crawford the save and the Spartans an 8-7 victory.

The Spartans return to action Thursday, April 11 at 12:30 p.m. against SUNY Cortland.
