BOSTON, Mass – Vermont State University Castleton baseball lost to Emerson College 21-14 Thursday evening.
The Spartans returned to New England for a matchup against Emerson on Thursday. Getting the game started,
Mikey Raby Jr. (2-4) singled a ball towards the shortstop to allow for
Tyler McLain (1-4) to cross home plate and score the first run of the game.
Emerson's Chris Ferara got the Lions going with a 2-run home run take the lead over Castleton. The Lions would go on to earn five runs on four hits to take a 7-1 lead after the second inning.
Castleton entered the third inning ready to crank the bats. With McLain and
Hunter Perkins (3-6) on base,
Jackson Cardozo (3-4) sent a ball towards the shortstop to allow for Perkins to reach home for the first run of the inning. Raby Jr. put one past the third baseman for a single, advancing the runners and sending McLain home for the earned run. With bases loaded,
Brandon Ramirez would be struck by a pitch to get on base and send Cardozo home and making it 7-4 game.
Jared Cafasso (2-5) popped one towards left field which was good enough bring
Alex Bingham (2-4) home to close in on Emerson's lead.
Turner Clews had a sacrifice flyout to bring tag an RBI to his name, and
Kannon Dush (1-5) capped off the inning with a 3-run home run to give the Spartans a 9-6 lead.
After Castleton's eight run inning, the Lions answered with a couple runs in the third and fourth to tie the game back up at nine. Emerson would go on to have an eight run inning of their own in the fifth to make it a 17-9 game.
Castleton had their chances to get back into the game once again. Hitting the ball well and getting on base, Castleton were able to grab a couple runs from fielders' choices to make it 17-11 entering the seventh. McLain sent one toward center field to bring Perkins home once again and Bingham smashed a double towards right field to bring in an RBI.
Trey LaVigne (1-1) would be Castleton's final scorer of the night, with his first career home run in the eighth inning.
The Lions would finish off the game with four more runs to shutdown Castleton's comeback and walk out alive with a 21-14 victory over the Spartans.
VTSU Castleton returns to action Saturday, March 9 at 2:30 p.m. against Middlebury.
