BOSTON, Mass. – Vermont State University Castleton baseball sunk by UMass Boston in doubleheader action on Saturday.
Game 1: UMass Boston 10, VTSU Castleton 8
Sam Crawford took the mound in game one for the Spartans. He saw five innings action, where he had one strikeout, three walks and six hits on 96 pitches. UMass Boston got past Crawford early with a runs coming from the first and third inning to give the Beacons a 2-0.
Castleton ignited in the third inning and it started with
Jack Boyle, who lit the dynamite for the with a solo home run to get the Spartans on the board. The Spartans loaded up the bases on the Beacons and let the runs come flying in. Two walks were given by the Beacons pitching, which allowed for two runs to come in and give Castleton a 3-2 lead.
Mikey Raby Jr. sent a single to left field to advance the runners and tac on another run. After cycling through the order, Boyle stepped back up to plate and smashed a ball to deep right center to earn a triple and bring in three runners to extend Castleton's lead to seven.
Hunter Perkins had the final hit in the inning, which was good enough to bring Boyle home and cap off an eight run inning for the Spartans.
However, the Beacons wouldn't be held back, as a strong fifth inning with a two run homer included allowed for UMass Boston to trail only by one at the end of the inning. The Beacons would go on to bring in three additionally runners over the course of the final innings to steal the win from Castleton and take game one 10-8.
Game 2: UMass Boston 12, VTSU Castleton 0
The Beacons picked up right where they left off from game one and brought it over to game two. Two runs on Owen Phillips in the first inning allowed for the Beacons to take control of the game early. Phillips over the course of five innings, was able to put away five batters before he was relieved.
UMass Boston's pitching kept the Spartans in check in game two with 15 strikeouts zero runs and five hits allowed. The Beacons were able to feed off the defensive energy and go on to score 10 runs through the remaining innings and take game two in the doubleheader action.
The Spartans return to action Monday, April 1 against Skidmore at 4 p.m.
