Softball Falls to Nationally-Ranked Engineers

TROY, N.Y. — The Vermont State University Castleton softball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader at No. 19 RPI on Wednesday, being held scoreless in 5-0 and 3-0 defeats.

Brianna Belisle reached base four times with a hit, walk, and two HBPs as Masson Billert accounted for the Spartans' (6-6) second knock of the day.

Madison Gould hurled six complete frames in the opener, allowing three earned runs and three walks while striking out four. Katie Gallagher got 4.1 innings of work in a game-two start as Trista DeLong followed with 1.2 innings, keeping the Engineers (13-0-1) at bay using two punch-outs.

RPI received contributions throughout the lineup, combining for 12 hits from eight different hitters. Alex Ledger had a single and two doubles to drive in two runs. Erin Askins totaled three hits, one being a two-bagger, with an RBI as pinch hitter Emma Newberry whacked a double to score two.

Brooke Sroczynski went the distance in game one, tossing a one-hit gem with eight Ks. Alexis Cooke picked up the nightcap win, fanning four in 5.1 before Ava Markert struck out three in relief for the save.

The Spartans begin Little East Conference play on Saturday, March 30 at Keene State. The doubleheader is slated for a 1 p.m. start at the Owl Athletic Complex.
