SEGUIN, Texas. – Vermont State University Castleton baseball defeated Texas Lutheran University 5-3 Friday evening.
VTSU Castleton (1-6) secured their first win of the season after defeating TLU (5-6) 5-3 Friday night in Seguin, Texas.
Sam Crawford's big day on the mound backed by
Hunter Perkins' (3-4) two RBI's and
Jackson Cardozo (3-5) at the plate.
After taking a day off, Castleton entered today refreshed and ready to pick up their first win of the season. The Spartans got off to a hot start in the first inning. With Perkins and Cardozo getting on base with their first at bats,
Jared Maher (1-2) hit a single through the right side of the field to advance the runners and bring Perkins home for the first run of the game. Continuing the hot start,
Alex Bingham (1-5) was able to bring Cardozo home from his at bat to give Castleton an early 2-0 lead.
Tyler McLain (1-4) connected on a single down the right field line to bring Perkins home to add on to Castleton's lead. With bases loaded for Castleton, Perkins smashed a ball to center field to bring in two runners to give the Spartans a 5-1 lead in the sixth inning.
Behind Castleton's victory was Crawford on the mound. The Hopkinton, N.H. native gave the Bulldogs nothing but problems at the plate. In six innings pitched, Crawford tossed seven strikeouts on 97 pitches and only allow one run through five innings.
The Bulldogs began connecting on some hits and attempted at making a comeback on the Spartans. However, sophomore
Luke Russell came in for the final three innings and was lights out for the Spartans. Russell struck out two batters and only allowed one run to shut down the Bulldogs comeback attempt to secure the save and give Castleton their first win of the season.
VTSU Castleton stays in Seguin, Texas for doubleheader action against TLU, with the first game taking place Saturday, March 2 at 1 p.m. ET (12 p.m. CT) and the second at 4 p.m. (3 p.m. CT).
