Women's Hockey Shutout Salem St. With a 3-0 Victory

SALEM, Mass. – Vermont State University Castleton women's hockey defeated Salem St. 3-0 Saturday afternoon.

VTSU Castleton faced off against New England Hockey Conference opponent Salem St. Saturday afternoon. The Spartans came in to Rockett Arena after picking up a victory to Southern Maine last night, 2-1. With puck drop taking place, Castleton picked up right where they left off last night. Sophomore Moa Carlsson connected with Amanda Vaughn to extend her point streak to three games, as Vaughn found the back of the net to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead halfway through the first.

In just a little over a minute to begin the second, Sophomore Meg Aiken lit the lamp with a feed from Alex Johnson to extend Castleton's led to two. This was Aiken's third point in two games and her fourth goal of the season. Castleton continued to apply the pressure to the Vikings, outshooting them in 43-29 in today's contest. The Vikings had their chances to get back into the game with four power play opportunities but it would be the Spartans stealing the show, as Julia Carpenter and Carlsson set up Vaughn on the penalty kill to bag a shorthanded goal for her second of the game.

Salem made valiant efforts in the third to try and get back into the game, but senior keeper Kirsten DiCicco denied all opportunities the Vikings had up their sleeves. DiCicco made her presence known, as she turned away four power play chances and finished with 29 saves and a shutout to extend Castleton's win streak to three games. With her third shutout of the season, DiCicco ties Alexis Kalm for the most career shutouts in program history with 11.

VTSU Castleton will wrap up the regular season with two home games next weekend, starting with William Smith on Friday, February 9 at 6 p.m. and Elmira on Saturday, February 10 at 3 p.m.
