GORHAM, Maine – The Vermont State University Castleton volleyball team concluded its season Saturday afternoon, falling to Southern Maine 3-1.
Hailey Martinovich solidified her spot at the top of the program record book after tallying 14 kills to bring her career total to 879 in her final game as a Spartan. Martinovich surpassed Jamie Lemieux who has held the record since 2009 with 875 kills.
Martinovich led the Spartans with 14 kills, chipping in four digs and one block.
Alondra Rojas dished out 17 assists, contributing 11 digs, six kills, and five service aces. Rojas leads the Little East Conference in service aces with 86 and sits second in NCAA Division III women's volleyball.
The Huskies jumped out to a 13-5 lead before
Madison Sheehan notched a kill, and
Isabella Luna served up an ace. The Huskies continued with the momentum and finished out the set 25-14. In set two, the Huskies pulled out to a 12-9 lead before the Spartans took advantage of errors to reach within one. The Spartans battled back and forth with the Huskies, who took set two 25-19.
The Spartans took control of set three, jumping out to an 8-1 lead before the Huskies found an answer. The Spartans took control back of the set right away, not letting the Huskies string together more than four points. Martinovich's tying kill came at 24-16 of the third set before
Vanessa LeBrun put down a kill to take set three for the Spartans. The record-setting kill came at 5-5 in the fourth set before she put down two more to get the Spartans within six as the set went on, and set the new program record in career kills. The Huskies scored five points in a row and took the fourth and final set 25-14.
The Spartans finished the season with a 10-14 record, and program history rewritten for the second season in a row.
