Rutland, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's hockey team tied with Southern Maine 1-1 in regulation. The Huskies won the shootout 3-2 in the first of two games this weekend.
Castleton opened the scoring with
Mikayla Brightman dumping the puck down the ice towards
Moa Carlsson. Carlsson turned on the burners and capitalized on a breakaway opportunity to bag her first goal of the season and give Castleton a 1-0 lead.
Both goaltenders played well with
Victoria Bakopanos making 24 saves for the Spartans and Haley McKim stopping 34 shots for the Huskies.
Madison Chagnon found the game-tying goal in the second period for the Huskies that would send the game into overtime.
With neither side finding the game winner in overtime, the game concluded in a draw but a shootout took place to serve as a tiebreaker in conference standings.
Ellie Schliebener and Carlsson saw their opportunities hit the back of the netting but the Spartans' efforts weren't enough as the Huskies won the shootout 3-2 to win the tiebreaker.
The two sides play again tomorrow November 9 at 1 p.m. at Spartan Arena.
