Men's Hockey Wins 2024 Terry Moran Invitational

RUTLAND, Vt. – Luke Chakrabarti of the Vermont State University Castleton men's hockey program scored the game-winning goal in overtime to win the 2024 Terry Moran Invitational—on Saturday afternoon.

Chakrabarti was named the tournament's most valuable player after providing three goals and three assists for the Spartans. Josh Ward was named goalie of the tournament for providing 45 saves and two victories and Zach Papapetros was named to the tournament's team with a goal and an assist to finish with a +4 rating for Castleton's defensive line.

The Monarchs wasted no time getting on the board with a goal by Kevin Martin in just 33 seconds to open the scoring. King's extended their lead to two with a goal by Zane Burleigh in the early minutes of the first period.

Chakrabarti put the Spartans on the board halfway through the first period with Emmett McHardy and Zach Papapetros setting up the winger to close the Monarch's lead to 2-1 after one period of play.

Castleton returned the favor to King's by opening the second period with a goal by Josef Vyvial in just 48 seconds to tie the game at two. The Spartans wasted no energy in the second period with Andrew Stefura finishing his chance set up by Chakrabarti to give Castleton their first lead of the game 3-2.

King's didn't let Castleton's lead stay for long as Ethan Hersant rifled a shot to find the back of the net and bring the game level at 3-3. T

The Spartans' specialty teams played a huge factor in tonight's outcome. Zach Trempner and Chakrabarti set up McHardy for a powerplay goal to put Castleton ahead once again. Shortly after, Chakrabarti put away a shorthanded goal for his second of the game to put Castleton ahead 5-3 heading into the final period.

King's took control with two goals in the early minutes of the third period to bring the game level once again. Stone Stelzl found Jackson Kobelka to put Castleton back in front with 6:19 seconds remaining in the third.

The Monarchs found a powerplay goal of their own with Hersant bagging his second of the game to tie the game at six and send the game into overtime.

Castleton's powerplay came through one more time for the Spartans, as Stefura put a shot on net that rebounded towards Chakrabarti, who secured his second hat trick in three games to secure the victory for Castleton.

The Spartans improved to 2-7-1 on the year and will return to action Tuesday, December 3 at 7 p.m. against Saint Michael's.
