COLCHESTER, Vt. -The Vermont State University Castleton men's ice hockey team fell to Saint Michael's 2-1 in a Tuesday night contest.
Brendan McFarland scored the game-winning goal with 2:16 remaining to improve Saint Michael's to 8-3-0, while Castleton drops to 2-8-1 on the year.
The first period was a scoreless outing with
Charles Watson making his collegiate debut between the pipes for Castleton. The first-year goaltender made 12 saves in the first period and finished with 26 saves. Cole Manahan made a season-high 46 saves for the Purple Knights to secure victory.
Period two saw McFarland score the first goal of the game to give Saint Michael's the advantage.
Castleton dominated most of the game by winning 38 faceoffs and outshooting Saint Michael's 47-28. The Spartans finally saw one of their many chances hit the back of the net with
Cam Reid and
Aiden Robson connecting with
Chance Heaphy for his second goal of the season to tie at 1-1.
The game did not stay tied for long, as McFarland bagged his second of the match to put Saint Michael's ahead 2-1. Castleton put their best effort in to try to tie the game, but the Purple Knights would hang on and end Castleton's win streak.
VTSU Castleton will return to action on Friday, December 6 as it hosts Salve Regina for its annual Teddy Bear Toss, set for a 7 p.m. puck drop..
