CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton field hockey team claimed it's Little East Conference Field Hockey Regular Season Championship with a 5-2 win over UMass Dartmouth on senior day.
It took little time for the hosts to find its way on the scoreboard as
Gwyn Vincent beat the goalie with 2:19 off the clock.
Two minutes later
Peyton Richardson claimed an unassisted goal of her own to put the Spartans up 2-0.
The final goal of the opening-quarter, the eventual game-winner was owned by
Arianna Spiezio as she was able to redirect a
Reilly Tennis shot that was off the mark.
Spiezio collected her second goal of the day, sixth of the season as again was able to make use of a long shot, this time from
Emily Downing to make it 4-0 with nine minutes remaining in the half.
As the clock wound down on the period,
Haley Lassen seemed to have added a tally of her own from the top of the circle, on a goal that was later disallowed.
The visiting Corsairs recorded their first goal of the game off a penalty corner as first-year Arlene Johnson was to find the back of the goal.
UMass Dartmouth pulled itself within two as Kenzie Bliven notched her eight goal of the season, helped along by Jenna Carvalho.
VTSU Castleton put all notions of a comeback to bed when
Emilee Higgins added herself to the scorer's column with just under six minutes remaining to make it 5-2.
Goalkeeper
Zoe Martin saw all 60 minutes of the contest, turning away two shots.
As the first-seed in the LEC playoffs the Spartans will enjoy a first-round bye.
The VTSU Castleton Field hockey team will return to action on Thursday at 4 p.m. as they play host to the winner of the Southern Maine and Eastern Connecticut matchup in the second round.
