Spartans Stumble as 2024 Season Comes to an End

DANBURY, Conn. – The Vermont State University Castleton football team wrapped up its 2024 slate in a loss to MASCAC-foe Western Connecticut on Saturday afternoon, 57-18.

It was a competitive first quarter, Tyson Hall found Wyatt Jackson on a 75-yard pass to make it 10-6 with 13 seconds remaining on the clock. WestConn would return the Connor Chilson kickoff 87 yards to go up 17-6 as time expired.

VTSU Castleton was unable to formulate a successful offensive push, going scoreless in the second stanza, meanwhile, the hosting Wolves were able to add two touchdowns for a 29-6 lead heading into halftime.

The Spartans recorded the lone score in the third quarter as Hall capped off an 18-play, 73-yard drive with a one-yard rush for a touchdown. The two-point conversion was no good as they trailed 29-12.

An interception by the hosts was returned 32-yards for a touchdown early in the final period of play, helping them to extend their lead to 36-12. They tacked on another tally just three minutes later to extend their lead to 30.

The Spartans' final score of the game was owned by Christian Keeling as he opened the squads drive with a 75-yard rush for a touchdown to make it 42-18. Keeling concludes his senior season with a pair of scores.

WestConn added two tallies and three-points after the play to secure a 57-18 victory.

Hall went 18-for-40, throwing for 219 yards and one touchdown.

Keeling was efficient on the ground with his two carries for 82 yards and one touchdown.

Leading the defense was Kevin McDonough with his nine tackles, composed of seven solo and two assisted. Two of McDonough's take downs were for a loss.

Proving to be disruptive forces, Ian DeTulleo and CJ Childs each recorded two pass break-ups while combining for six tackles.

VTSU Castleton concludes its season 3-7 as it looks forward to the 2025 season when it joins the New Jersey Athletic Conference.
