Women's Soccer Comes Up Short to Beacons

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's soccer team fell in Little East Conference action to UMass Boston 2-1, on Saturday afternoon.

Daniella Celotto scored the game-winning goal in the 78th minute to give Boston their 10th win of the season and their fifth in conference play. Maggie McKearin tallied her 10th goal of the year as the Spartans fell to 7-9-1, with a 3-4 record in the LEC.

Castleton opened the scoring in the 11th minute with McKearin pressing the Beacons' defense, causing them to panic and turn the ball over to McKearin who drove down the field and slotted the 1-on-1 play against the keeper right past her to put the Spartans up 1-0.

The two teams battled at Dave Wolk Stadium with the Beacons taking a 16-12 shot advantage, but both sides had their time of taking over at different points in the match. Emma Ezzo kept the Spartans ahead with eight saves, including a big save at the end of the first half to keep the Spartans ahead.

UMass Boston brought the energy in the second half, with Sofia Schallmo leading the charge. Schallmo connected with Andrea Rivera in the 64th minute to tie the game 1-1. The Beacons continued to press the Spartans and were able to find the game-winning goal by Celotto.

Looking for an answer to try and tie the game up, McKearin went 1-on-1 with Boston's goalie Isabella O'Connell once again, but it would be O'Connell coming up with the stop this time to keep Boston ahead. Despite the strong late efforts from Castleton, UMass Boston would hold on to secure a 2-1 victory.

VTSU Castleton is back in action for their final home match of the season against Bard College on Wednesday, October 30 at 4 p.m.
