GORHAM, Maine – The Vermont State University Castleton field hockey team defeated Little East opponent Southern Maine Saturday afternoon, 1-0.
The game-winning goal came with five minutes left in the third quarter. The Spartans earned their third penalty corner opportunity in a row, with
Gwyn Vincent ripping a shot toward the far post and
Peyton Richardson tipping the shot in for the lone goal of the game.
The first quarter was quiet, with neither team getting off more than three shots.
Zoe Martin and Huskies goalie Eleanor Folsom each saved two shots. The Spartans outshot the Huskies 4-2 in the second quarter, with neither team finding the back of the cage.
The Spartans outshot the Huskies 6-1 in the third quarter, with four penalty corner opportunities before Richardson found the back of the cage with five minutes to go in the quarter. The Spartans had three more penalty corner opportunities to end the third quarter but were not able to convert. The Huskies outshot the Spartans in the fourth quarter 4-1 but were not able to find a goal, Martin saving four shots on the day to secure her fifth shutout of the season.
The Spartans are on the road Wednesday, October 30 against Plymouth at 4 p.m.
