KEENE, N.H. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's volleyball team fell 3-1 at Keene on Wednesday night.
Hailey Martinovich led the Spartans with 16 kills and 18 digs, while
Alondra Rojas dished out a team-high 33 assists and chipped in three service aces to continue to lead the Little East with 60 aces on the year.
The Spartans came out hot in set one going up 13-6 before the Owls slowly started to come back. The Spartans went up 18-9 before trading points back-and-forth with the Owls who were able to get within six, but the Spartans were able to end the set 25-18. The second set went the distance, with the two teams fighting for the lead throughout the set, with the Owls coming out on top, 26-24.
Set three saw the Spartans go up 11-8 before the Owls took advantage of errors and kills to take a 19-15 lead. The Spartans fought back but fell short with the Owls taking set three 25-19. The Owls set the pace for the fourth and final set going up 7-2 to start the set. Kills from
Jocelyn Ray and Martinovich with a service ace from Rojas put the Spartans within five, before the Owls closed out the game on a kill to take set four 25-19.
The Spartans are back in action Saturday, October 5 at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. against LEC opponent WestConn and non-conference opponent Fisher.
