Women's Basketball Falters Against Keene State

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's basketball team suffered a defeat at the hands of Keene State on Wednesday night, falling 58-46 in Little East Conference action at Glenbrook Gym.

The Spartans fall to 7-5 overall and 1-2 in the LEC with the loss, while Keene State improves to .500 on the year at 5-5 overall and 1-1 in league action. The Spartans struggled from the field, hitting only 26.7 percent of shots on the night. The Owls hit 32.7 percent from the field but knocked down 8-of-21 from three-point land and controlled the glass with a 47-39 rebounding edge.

Stasia Epler scored a team-high 16 points with a pair of threes and Liz Bailey had a 10-point, 10-rebound night for her third double-double in a row. Emily Adams added eight points and five rebounds and Elise Magro had seven points, five rebounds and four steals.

The Owls' Brynn Rautiola lit up the scoreboard, racking up 30 points with seven threes in addition to eight rebounds. Valerie Luizzi added 14 points and Samantha Lee had 10 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double.

The Spartans got off to a fast start, racing out to a 13-2 lead in the first five minutes thanks to points from five different players. The Owls responded in a big way, closing the first frame on a 12-0 run to lead VTSU Castleton 14-13 after the opening quarter.

Castleton tied the game at 14-14 in the second thanks to a Maggie McKearin free throw, but another three by Rautiola—her fourth of the game at the time—put the Owls ahead 17-14. Bailey responded with a jumper to cut the deficit to one point, but a 4-0 Keene run put the visitors ahead 21-16 three minutes into the second. Castleton held them off the board the rest of the half, however, closing the quarter with a 7-0 run to lead 23-21 at the half.

The third quarter was all Keene State, with the Owls outscoring the Spartans 23-6 out of halftime. Castleton battled back in the fourth by outscoring Keene State 17-14, but it was not enough to overcome the lopsided third quarter as the Owls kept the Spartans at bay over the final 10 minutes to seal the victory.

VTSU Castleton returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m. at UMass Dartmouth.
