Field Hockey Downed In Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY Vt. – Vermont State University Castleton field hockey was delivered its first loss of the season to defending national champion and top-ranked Middlebury on Tuesday night, 12-0.

The Panthers' set the tone in the first period, scoring eight and out shooting the Spartans' 22-0. Zoe Martin had 22 saves but it wasn't enough to stop Middlebury's attack.  The Spartans' defense was able to delay the Panthers' offensive attack in the 2nd half, but couldn't generate anything for themselves on the attack.

Middlebury's All-American Katie George led the scoring with four goals in Tuesday's matchup. Senior goalkeeper KK Newtown recorded the win and shutout.

The Spartans will look to bounce back when they play SUNY Oneonta, Saturday September 9 at noon.
