NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's soccer team was narrowly defeated by Albertus Magnus, 1-0, in non-conference action Sunday afternoon.
The Spartans (0-2) put five shots on net including 90th-minute attempts from Matt Spiller and Tanner Curtis. Tabbed with on-target shots in the first half were Stanley Andersen, Lucas McCane, and Adolphe Alfani. Freshman defender Wyatt Robbie spent the entire game on the pitch, becoming the only VTSU Castleton outfielder who has played every minute of the 2023 season thus far. In goal, Andres Soto-Burgos stopped nine of the Falcons' (1-0-1) shots on frame.
Albertus scored the contest's lone strike in the 26th minute when Kelvin Cortez found a seam in the Spartan defense, delivering a shot to the right side of the net just outside of Soto-Burgos' reach.
VTSU Castleton has its home opener at Dave Wolk Stadium on Wednesday, September 6 against VTSU Johnson. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
