CASTLETON, Vt. – Vermont State University Castleton field hockey downed RPI Wednesday night at Dave Wolk Stadium, 6-2.
Senior forward
Emily Harris had another goal-scoring frenzy with five goals on 12 shots in the victory.
Madison Hanna set up Harris twice to grab a couple assists.
Jess Smithson tallied her second goal of the season and
Peyton Richardson and
Haley Lassen each recorded an assist for the Spartans.
Harris wasted no time, scoring exactly one minute into the first quarter. After Harris' first goal, the defense took control for both teams, keeping both offenses out of the defensive zone for most of the first. Late in the period, Richardson drove past RPI's defense to find Harris for the easy tap in goal to end the period 2-0.
RPI'S Abby Peterson got the Engineers' first score halfway through the second quarter. Then, in just a few passes down the field, Hanna delivered the cross to Harris put the Spartans up 3-1. VTSU Castleton maintained the offensive attack, winning five penalty corners in the second quarter alone. The Spartans took advantage of one of those opportunities, with Lassen setting up Smithson, who blasted one past the keeper to put the score at 4-2 at the half.
VTSU Castleton picked up right where they left off, the connection of Hanna to Harris struck once again to begin the second the half. The connection was Hanna's second assist and Harris' fourth goal of the game. Harris earned a penalty stroke late in the third quarter and capitalized on the opportunity, tucking the ball away into the top corner to cap off her 10-point performance.
The Spartans are back in action Friday night September 15, at 7 p.m. against Skidmore at Dave Wolk Stadium.
