MANCHESTER, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's soccer team dropped a back-and-forth contest against St. Lawrence, 3-0, in the final day of the Manchester Women's College Cup Sunday.
The Spartans (1-3) put four shots on net – three in the second half – compared to the Saints' (2-2-1) mark of nine. Emma Ezzo stopped six attempts to match her season high set in the season opener at Plattsburgh State.
St. Lawrence's Lilly Stone sent a ball flying over the crossbar 10:45 into the game following a corner kick, but found pay dirt on her next shot from the corner of the box less than a minute later to give the Saints a lead. A 25th-minute breakaway led by Bella D'Anza set up Zoe Rogan to deliver a boot past Ezzo, extending the gap to 2-0. The VTSU Castleton attacking zone began to take shape in the later part of the period as Becky Hannwacker launched an on-target dart in the 33rd minute.
Soon after halftime, Lila Asselin slid into a shot inside the Saints' box that SLU goalie Keely Snode caught just inside the right post. The Saints struck again in the 56th minute when Meredith Donahue's shot was blocked by Lily Modica, rolling to Grace Mochnal whose one-timer found the back of the net. Maddie Lindgren and Holly Cudmore sent a pair of deliveries toward the Saints goal as the Spartan defense thwarted an 80th-minute surge, finalizing proceedings at 3-0.
The Spartans make their season debut at Dave Wolk Stadium on Wednesday, September 13 with RPI. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
