PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's soccer team began its 2023 campaign at Plattsburgh State Friday afternoon, suffering a 6-0 defeat to the Cardinals.
The Spartans (0-1) fired two shots on goal coming from the boots of Megan Ezzo and Gwen Bridges. Goalkeeper Emma Ezzo notched six saves in her second career 90-minute game in net. Kristina O'Neil earned a starting role in her first game as a Spartan while Bridges, Emma Kirby, and Lila Asselin also made their VTSU Castleton debuts.
Powered by a pair of Ella Santomassimo scores early on, the Cardinals (1-0) amassed a three-goal advantage by the contest's 21st minute. Ezzo denied four shots to keep Plattsburgh at bay for the ensuing 39 minutes, but the Cardinals broke through with three second-half tallies to finalize the season opener.
The Spartans face off with in-state rival Norwich on Sunday, September 3. Kickoff in Northfield, Vt. is set for 1 p.m.
