CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University women's lacrosse team dropped a Little East Conference clash with Plymouth State on Wednesday night, falling 17-3 at Dave Wolk Stadium.
Castleton had three different goal scorers in the contest, with
Phoebe Loomis,
Tien Connor and
Kimberly McCarthy finding the back of the net. McCarthy also had three draw controls and three ground balls in the game.
Katie Opiela made 10 saves in the contest, surpassing the 100-save mark this season.
Plymouth State (9-6, 5-1 LEC) outshot Castleton (4-11, 1-5 LEC) 35-10 overall and 31-7 on goal while winning 19-of-26 draw controls and collecting a 29-12 edge in ground balls. Castleton was 12-of-21 on the clear and Plymouth went 13-of-16.
The Panthers were paced by nine points from Emily Santom, who had six goals and three assists. Olivia Croke had six assists and a pair of goal for an eight-point night while Maddie Hunt had four goals and Julia Donovan had three. Jenna Stowell had 14 draw controls and Piper Sherbert earned the win with three saves over 45 minutes.
Castleton struck first when Connor drove to the net and scored unassisted, but Plymouth answered quickly with a goal by Santom just 14 seconds later. Julia Donovan gave the Panthers a 2-1 lead, but the Spartans bounced back with a goal from McCarthy just 30 seconds later. The rest of the quarter was all Plymouth State, with the Panthers closing the opening frame on a 7-0 run to lead 9-2 after one.
The lead pushed to 12-2 before Loomis found the back of the net for the Spartans four minutes into the second quarter, making it a 12-3 contest. That was the last score for Castleton, as Plymouth tacked on five more goals in the second quarter, two in the third and two in the fourth.
The Spartans wrap up the regular season on Saturday at noon when they host UMass Dartmouth. Castleton's seniors will be honored prior to the contest.
