CASTLETON, Vt. — In its first on-campus match of the season, the Castleton men's tennis team fell 7-2 to Little East Conference opponent Salem State Saturday.
The Spartans (4-6, 0-5 LEC) struggled in doubles play as the top two flights each went down 8-0. The duo of Andy Phelan and Stanley Andersen contended well at the No. 3 spot, but took an 8-4 loss to give Salem State (7-1, 4-0) a dubs sweep.
Andersen and Phelan continued their tough play into singles, picking up victories at the fifth and sixth slots. Andersen breezed past Kevin Merino-Rivas with a 6-1, 6-0 match as Phelan trounced Josh Gruber in back-to-back 6-1 sets. Using victories at the top four spots, the Vikings collected the dual triumph to remain undefeated in conference action.
Castleton moves away from LEC play tomorrow, April 16, traveling to Colby-Sawyer. First serve in New London, N.H. is scheduled for 1 p.m.
