NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Castleton University women's lacrosse team led by a goal early in the fourth quarter, but a late rally by Mount St. Mary stymied the Spartans and gave the Knights a 16-13 victory in non-conference action on Saturday.
The Spartans sit at 2-5 on the season while Mt. St. Mary improves to 3-4. Castleton had an edge in shots, 37-28, as well as shots on goal, 30-22. Castleton committed 31 turnovers while MSMC had 35 and ground balls were nearly even, favoring the Knights 31-27. Castleton claimed 20-of-33 draw controls in the contest as well.
Lacey Greenamyre continued her hot-streak scoring the ball, posting four goals and two assists for a six-point day. It was her third consecutive multi-goal game. Greenamyre also led the team with five ground balls, five caused turnovers and 10 draw controls.
Phoebe Loomis had five points on four goals and an assist, netting her fourth hat-trick in a row.
Tien Connor had three points on two goals and an assist while
Kimberly McCarthy scored twice.
Megan Ward chipped in one goal and one assist.
Madelyn Cote added four ground balls
Katie Opiela made six saves in goal.
MSMC was powered by five goals and three assists from Victoria Ward, while Antonia Licardi added three goals and an assist. Ella Garner had two goals and two helpers. Kate Crooker had six ground balls and caused seven turnovers. Goalie Liz Petrellese was a key factor in the game, stopping 17 shots for the Knights.
The Knights jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead before Loomis got Castleton on the board with 8:21 to go in the opening quarter. MSMC answered quickly, scoring just 37 seconds later to take a 3-1 lead. The lead was 4-1 when Greenamyre and Loomis scored back-to-back goals to narrow it back to a one-goal game, 4-3.
Mt. St. Mary pushed its edge to 5-3 in the second quarter before Greenamyre's second goal made it 5-4. After another Knight goal, Castleton rattled off four in a row to take an 8-6 lead. Connor got the run started, followed by Ward and two from Loomis. MSMC closed the gap to one, 8-7, but McCarthy and Greenamyre pushed the lead to 10-7 with back-to-back goals. The Knights closed the half strong, however, netting three goals in the final two minutes of the second quarter to go into halftime deadlocked, 10-10.
MSMC continued its streak out of the halftime break, scoring twice more for a 12-10 edge. McCarthy and Greenamyre scored goals in the third to tie the game at 12-12 going to the final 15 minutes. Connor opened the fourth with a quick goal, scoring just 1:07 into the frame. Mt. St. Mary tied the game at 13-13 just two minutes later, and poured in three more goals down the stretch on its way to victory.
Castleton is off until next Saturday, April 1, when it hosts Southern Maine at noon in the Little East Conference opener.
