MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Castleton softball team wrapped up its visit to the Fastpitch Nation Spring Classic Sunday afternoon, dominating Game 1 with an 13-2 win over St. Charles Community College before dropping their final game of the weekend against Potomac State 8-4.
Castleton 13, St. Charles 2
Alexis Rogers was the star of the show in Sunday's opening game. The freshman pitched her first complete game in the circle, allowing just two runs and fanning seven in five innings of action, while going 3-4 at the plate with two RBIs and three runs. Also shining at the plate were infielders
Allison Almond and
Hannah Mosher, who hit home runs in the first and third innings to put Castleton up big en route to the mercy-rule win.
The Spartans were hot from the first pitch, getting singles from
Kate LaPan and Rogers before Mosher loaded the bases after getting hit by a pitch. With the infield full, Almond crushed her first career grand slam to clear the bases and put Castleton up 4-0 after four at-bats.
Riding momentum, the Spartans added five more runs on RBIs from
Jess Heinrichs, LaPan and Rogers to take an 9-0 lead after the first half inning.
LaPan kicked things off once again in the third, getting on base via error before Mosher hit her own homer to make it an 11-2 game. Castleton added runs 12 and 13 in the fifth after an error by the Cougars' pitcher sent Mosher and Rogers across home plate.
Back in the circle, Rogers retired the first two batters herself before Almond handled a routine grounder to clinch the 13-2 victory.
Castleton 4, Potomac State 8
The Catamounts took an early 3-0 lead on a first-inning homerun from Abby Peace, but the Spartans stole one back via
Miranda Fish on a wild pitch to make it a two-run game after two.
After falling behind 6-1, Castleton responded with a trio of RBIs from
Alexandra Brouillette and Rogers to cut the lead back to two, but a pair of runs by Potomac State in the sixth inning put the game out of reach.
Olivia Joy made the start in the circle, allowing three runs — two earned — in two innings, with
Katie Gallagher and
Lauren Ross each pitching two innings in relief.
The Spartans concluded their trip to Myrtle Beach with an 11-4 win over Genesee Community College. Freshman
Dana Elkins picked up the win in the circle, adding two hits at the plate, while Brouillette tossed three scoreless innings in relief.
Castleton finishes the Classic 4-4 including a 2-2 record in NCAA games, with their next slate of games set for Thursday, March 23 against Suny Cobleskill. First pitch for the team's home-opener is at 3 p.m.
