Women's Lacrosse Drubs Mitchell; McCarthy Sets Single-Game Program Record

NEW LONDON, Conn. – It was a record-setting day for Castleton University women's lacrosse's Kimberly McCarthy on Saturday, as the junior midfielder racked up 10 goals—the most in a single game in program history—to help lead the Spartans to a 22-2 victory against Mitchell College.

McCarthy tops Castleton Hall-of-Famer Marie Van Der Kar's single-game record, a mark that stood for nearly 14 years after Van Der Kar netted nine goals against Becker on March 27, 2009. Entering Saturday's slate of contests, only six players this season had scored 10 goals or more in a game in all of NCAA Division III women's lacrosse.

Castleton nets its first win of the season behind the offensive outburst, putting the Spartans at 1-3 overall. Mitchell falls to 1-2 with the loss. The Spartans held a 41-9 edge in shots with a 33-6 margin in shots on goal. Mitchell committed 35 turnovers to Castleton's 19, with the Spartans going 15-of-16 on clears while holding Mitchell to 9-of-25. The Spartans had a 40-30 edge in ground balls in the game along with an 18-10 advantage in draw controls.

All 10 of McCarthy's points game by way of putting the ball in the back of the cage, and she collected five ground balls and forced two turnovers on defense. Madelyn Cote had a career day as well, amassing career-bests across the board on offense with nine points on five goals and four assists. She also collected a career-high seven ground balls to lead the team. Lacey Greenamyre added two goals and five helpers along with five ground balls and 10 draw controls, while Phoebe Loomis posted the first hat-trick of her career with three goals and an assist. Maddie Brasser tallied a goal and two assists while Megan Ward had a goal as well for Castleton. Tien Connor dished out one assist. Katie Opiela made three saves in 45 minutes to earn the win in goal, while Brasser played between the pipes in the final 15 minutes, making one save.

Mitchell's only goals came from the stick of Jessica Krupnikoff, who also had seven ground balls and three caused turnovers. Both goals came from free-position shots. Hannah Gomes played all 60 minutes in goal, making 11 saves in the loss.

Castleton poured in goals early and often in the contest, racing out to an 8-0 lead in less than 10 minutes of gameplay. Four different Spartans scored the first four goals, as Brasser, Cote, McCarthy and Loomis got on the board to start the game. Cote's second goal was the team's fifth before McCarthy poured in three unanswered for an 8-0 edge. After Mitchell got on the board with 2:32 left in the opening quarter, Loomis answered quickly—just 20 seconds later—with her second goal of the day.

Cote and McCarthy were responsible for all five Spartan goals in the second quarter, alternating scores between themselves. Cote scored just 15 seconds into the frame and McCarthy struck 40 seconds later for an 11-1 lead to kick off running time. Cote scored a minute later for 12-1 lead, and McCarthy made it 13-1 with a player-up goal at the 8:45 mark. Cote's player-down goal with 2:15 left in the frame was the last score of the half, giving the Spartans a 14-1 lead at the break.

The third quarter began with a goal by McCarthy before Ward got on the board for a 16-1 lead. McCarthy then struck again for a 16-1 edge before Krupnikoff scored her second of the afternoon for Mitchell. The last three goals went the Spartans' way, with Greenamyre scoring a player down before McCarthy netted her 10th and final goal of the day with 3:02 to play. Loomis capped the day with her third goal to finish the scoring at 22-2.

The Spartans return to action Monday night at 7 p.m. when they host Colby-Sawyer at Dave Wolk Stadium.
