RUTLAND, Vt. -- The Castleton men's tennis team tallied its second clean sweep in as many contests, picking up a 9-0 victory over Norwich on Sunday afternoon.
The Spartans (2-0) toughed out a trio of doubles victories led by
Miki Almirall and
Phil Kluge at flight No. 1 against Sebastian Mucha/Matthias Tchantouridze of Norwich (0-2).
Jason Lipscomb, making his season debut, teamed with
Connor Davis to topple Dimitry Mucha and Molly Twombly, 8-4. Third-flight pair
Andy Phelan and
Stanley Andersen also took an 8-4 decision over Assumpta Nandawula/Ethan Teluk.
Anchoring the top flight in singles, Almirall earned his ninth career victory with a 6-3, 6-2 defeat of Sebastian Mucha. After a taking a narrow 7-5 first-set win, Kluge posted a 6-2 set to down Dimitry Mucha and secure the Spartan victory. Davis prevailed in the squad's first three-set match of the year, winning an 11-9 super tiebreak over Tchantouridze at the third slot. Lipscomb strengthened his first appearance of 2023 at flight four, putting away Twombly with two 6-0 sets. Right-hander Andersen took down Assumpta Nandawula at flight No. 5 with a pair of 6-3 sets. Jericho, Vt. native Phelan secured the final triumph at the sixth spot, beating Teluk in 6-3, 7-5 fashion to top off the shutout.
Not including Davis' super tiebreak win, the team has accumulated a combined set record of 23-1 in singles play while remaining perfect in doubles at 6-0.
Castleton looks to keep the streak alive on Sunday, March 19 in a home match against NVU-Lyndon. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Vermont Sport & Fitness Club.
