RUTLAND, Vt. -- The Castleton men's tennis team posted a clean sweep of NVU-Johnson, 9-0, in the season opener at Vermont Sport & Fitness Club Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans (1-0) were flawless in doubles action, combining for a score of 24-0. First-time pair
Miki Almirall and
Phil Kluge dropped the NVU-J (0-1) top-flight pair of Anthony Barbieri and Romelle Watt.
Stanley Andersen and
Connor Davis handled business at the second spot against Mohammed Semega/Raymond Baka while
Andy Phelan and
Dylan Miller put away Adiance Cheromiah/Jeremias Fagan at No. 3 doubles.
Castleton carried the momentum into singles play, taking nine 6-0 sets with three Spartans achieving 12-0 perfection. Making his debut at the top flight, Almirall cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Barbieri. Kluge held Watt scoreless at No. 2 singles, while Andersen posted a fourth-flight shutout in his first collegiate match over Semega. In the third slot,
Connor Davis went 6-1, 6-0 against Baka.
Andy Phelan and
Dylan Miller each won 6-0, 6-1 the fifth and sixth flights, respectively, to wrap up the 9-0 rout.
The season-opening victory marks Castleton's first 1-0 start since 2018.
The Spartans host Norwich tomorrow in Rutland, Vt. at 1:00 p.m.
