Women's Hockey Suffers Narrow Defeat at William Smith

GENEVA, N.Y. -- The Castleton women's hockey team fell on the road against William Smith, 3-2, Saturday afternoon.

Brooke Greenwood and Darby Palisi added scoring tallies for the Spartans (12-10-1, 9-7-0 NEHC) while Palisi and Samantha Lawler were tabbed with assists. Julia Carpenter won a team-best nine faceoffs while Greenwood went 7-for-11 in the circle. Kirsten DiCicco started her second game of the weekend in goal, compiling 31 saves for a .912 percentage on the day.

The Spartans found paydirt on their second power play opportunity as Greenwood buried a feed from Palisi and Lawler in the contest's 13th minute. Currently slotted third in the nation with a .956 penalty killing percentage, Castleton killed the Herons' (10-11-1, 8-6-0 NEHC) only man-up chance in the second half of the opening period.

Momentum shifted toward William Smith at the second frame's midpoint when the Herons dominated possession and began to hurl shots at DiCicco. The junior goaltender stepped up with seven saves in the first 10 minutes with a helpful pair of blocks by Maysa Ford. The equalizer came on a 12th-minute dart from Brittany Foster, evening proceedings at 1-1. Mia LaPlante applied the go-ahead goal with seven seconds left in the period to give the Herons a 2-1 lead.

Despite a steady barrage of Heron shots to kick off the third stanza, the Spartans rode an energy swing in the seventh minute when Darby Palisi corralled her own rebound and sent in the game-tying score. Minutes later, William Smith retook the advantage as Foster put in her second goal of the night for the eventual game-winner. The squads combined for four shots on goal for the final 8:39, but none found net as the Herons took a 3-2 win.

The Spartans are back on the ice on Friday, February 10 at home against Johnson & Wales for their annual Pink the Rink game. Puck drop is set for 6 p.m.
