Men's Soccer Clashes with Plymouth State, Remains in LEC Playoff Hunt

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's soccer team fought to a 1-1 draw against Plymouth State in Little East Conference action Tuesday afternoon.

Charlie Cisneros bagged the squad's lone tally off an assist from Matt Spiller. The Spartans (4-11-2, 1-4-2 LEC) took 23 shots, their second-highest mark this season, with nine on goal. Plymouth State (3-6-5, 0-4-3 LEC) also fired nine shots on goal, six of which were saved by Andres Soto-Burgos and two were knocked away by the Spartan defense.

An eighth-minute scoring chance for the Panthers featured Michael Padilla denying shots by John Christie and Walter Driscoll. Following minutes of even play, Massimo Korcsog launched in a dart from Driscoll to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. The visitors pounded the goal but came up empty-handed through the end of the half as Soto-Burgos snatched four shots.

VTSU Castleton organized an offensive attack coming out of the break and followed through on it using a Toby Ritzkowski corner kick in the 48th minute. Spiller gained possession and lifted a cross into the box that Cisneros headed into paydirt for the equalizer.

In a game with an LEC postseason berth on the line, emotions began to run high as PSU was assessed a red card with 30 minutes to go. The man advantage spurred a promising Spartan possession but the Panthers turned away six shots in a four-minute span. The sides traded shots for the rest of the contest with none getting through, finalizing proceedings at 1-1.

The Spartans travel to Southern Maine on Saturday, October 28 for their final regular season challenge at 3 p.m. The victor will claim the sixth seed in next week's conference playoffs.
