DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's soccer team clashed with UMass Dartmouth on the road Saturday, tussling with the Corsairs to a 0-0 draw.
The Spartans (4-7-1, 1-3-1 LEC) attempted nine shots as Stanley Andersen and Will Ambruso had the squad's two on-net deliveries. Andres Soto-Burgos turned aside all seven of the Corsairs' (1-10-3, 0-5-1) shots on goal including five in the second half. VTSU Castleton flashed its endurance as seven members of the starting 11 played a full game.
In the opening 45 minutes, neither side had clear momentum but the Corsairs began to ramp up their attack after the halftime break. Joey Paiva sent a couple of shots at Soto-Burgos and another that banged off the post in the early moments.
Despite benefitting from a 58th-minute yellow card against the hosts, scoring opportunities for the Spartans were hindered by three offsides in a seven-minute span. UMass Dartmouth began to find its footing in the final 15 minutes but were whistled twice for being offside and carded another three times as proceedings ended in a stalemate.
The Spartans are back in action on Monday, October 16 as they welcome Westfield State to Dave Wolk Stadium. Kickoff against the Owls is at 4 p.m.
