DANBURY, Conn. – The Castleton University men's basketball team scored a season-high 86 points, but it was not enough to top a tough Western Connecticut State University program on Monday night in road Little East Conference action.
The Spartans (3-15, 0-10 LEC) hit 29-of-65 from the field and knocked down a season-high 14 threes, but WestConn (18-1, 10-1 LEC), which is receiving votes in the latest D3hoops.com national poll, countered with a 39-of-75 night shooting with nine threes. The Wolves won the rebounding battle 49-30 and outscored Castleton 25-3 off turnovers.
Castleton had four players in double figures offensively, led by
Tray Wright's 19-point night. He added five rebounds and four assists as well.
John Walsh had a season-high 17 points, going 5-of-12 from three-point range.
Justin Schwarzbeck knocked down four threes and had 16 points for Castleton while grabbing a team-high six rebounds and blocking two shots. Carter Macker rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points.
Mu Moore added seven points off the bench on 3-of-3 shooting.
Kendall Robinson led all players with 25 points. Ryan Alkins added 17 and Jaheim Young had 11. Keeshawn Jones had a game-high seven rebounds and Jalen Jackson dished out five assists.
Castleton hung tight for the first five minutes of play, but a 9-0 run by WestConn pushed the gap to 18-5. Schwarzbeck hit a three to stop the run, but another eight-point run later in the half by Westconn made it 37-16. Castleton had a 10-3 run late in the first half to narrow the gap, but a late push by WestConn set the score at 59-34 at halftime.
The Spartans outscored WestConn in the second half 52-47 including a 13-2 run to close the game, but the first-half deficit was too much to overcome as the Wolves claimed the victory on their home court.
Castleton is back in action Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. against Plymouth State at Glenbrook Gym.
