Men’s Soccer Battles to Draw at Rhode Island College

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Castleton men's soccer team hit the road for a tough matchup with Rhode Island College Saturday afternoon, capitalizing on a late goal from Matt Spiller to earn a crucial 2-2 tie against the Anchormen.

Rhode Island (1-4-1, 0-1-1 LEC) opened up the game on the front foot, racking up two corners and six shots in the game's first 15 minutes, but none got past Andres Soto-Burgos. Fresh off his first ever goalkeeper of the week honor, the senior looked strong in net once again Saturday, tallying nine saves to tie his season-best mark while allowing two goals.

After 20 minutes of shutout soccer, the Anchormen finally found paydirt on a header from Larry Garcia to break open the scoring. With Rhode Island firmly in driver's seat, it appeared as though the Spartans (3-2-2, 1-0-1 LEC) would enter the break down one, but a quick reaction from Adolphe Alfani to force a turnover in the Anchormen's half and beat their keeper tied the game back at one in the 41st minute.

The shot by Alfani was Castleton's first and only of the half — Rhode Island took 14 shots in the period, getting five on frame — but it was all they needed to keep the score level at the break.

The second frame was much more tightly contested as both sides searched for the game-winner, and with just under 10 minutes left in the game a missed clearance set Jonathan Oliveira up with an opportunity he wouldn't miss, sending a hard shot past Soto-Burgos to give his team the lead. But with their backs against the wall, Castleton was able to respond once again, taking just three minutes to level the game via Spiller's first career goal.

A long ball from Seth Gagnon caused some trouble in the Anchormen's defensive end, with the ball settling at the feet of Spiller at the top of the box. With defenders running at him, the freshman took one touch and volleyed the ball low and into the bottom corner to once again tie the score at two.

Both sides created one last chance in the final five minutes but neither could convert, resulting in the 2-2 draw.

Next up for the Spartans is a matchup with Westfield State Tuesday, September 27. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
