Box Score DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Castleton women's tennis team hit the road for a match with UMass Dartmouth Friday afternoon, grabbing wins on singles and doubles courts before falling 7-2 to the Corsairs.
Starting off the afternoon on doubles courts, the Spartans' pairs on first and third courts fell 8-2 to give UMass Dartmouth and early 2-0 lead. But coming up with the crucial victory to tighten to contest were
Makayla Boisvert and
Stella Forte, who earned an 8-5 win, their first of the season as a duo.
The Corsairs (6-2, 2-0 LEC) claimed the team victory with three quick wins on second, third, and sixth singles to take the 5-1 lead, but Castleton (1-4, 0-2 LEC) fought hard to keep each of the remaining matches as close as possibe.
After dropping her first set 6-0,
Regina Marchese fought back in the second set to force and extra game before eventually falling 7-5. On fifth singles,
Ginny Trevisan found herself in a decisive third set once again, but unlike last week when she came out on top against Plattsburgh, the freshman was unable to complete the comeback, dropping the third set 10-6
.
Despite the close losses, showing out again to avoid the sweep was Forte, who earned her second singles win of the season on Court #4, besting UMass Dartmouth's Allan O'Connell 7-5, 6-4 to give the Spartans their second win of the afternoon, resulting in the 7-2 final.
Castleton will look to bounce back immediately with a match against Rhode Island College Saturday, September 24. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
