GORHAM, Maine – The Castleton women's soccer team was blanked by Southern Maine, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
Castleton (2-4) saw six different players record one shot on goal apiece, but all attempts were denied. Senior goalkeeper Alex Benfatti saved eight of the 12 on-target shots by the Huskies (4-1), her second-highest mark of the season.
Benfatti silenced the Husky offense for the contest's first 23 minutes, saving four shots before Southern Maine's Julia McKenna pushed one through for a 1-0 lead. The Spartans took a pair of shots that got denied, while Benfatti saved a pair of her own to keep the margin at one.
To begin the second 45 minutes, Southern Maine sent a blitz at the Spartan defense and hammered home three goals in nearly ten minutes while holding Castleton shotless. Brytney Moore was on-target with a shot in the 63rd minute, but USM keeper Breanna Atwood kept the Spartans at bay. Gabby Knight was wide left with a shot not long afterward, then the Huskies drove down the field and had another shot saved by Benfatti. Castleton took five shots in the game's final 15 minutes but the Huskies were unrelenting, holding off the Spartans for their fourth win.
The Spartans are back in action on Wednesday, September 21 at Dave Wolk Stadium to challenge the No. 23 Middlebury Panthers. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
