MANCHESTER, Vt. – The Castleton women's soccer team took on No. 6 MIT in the final game of the Manchester Women's College Cup Sunday afternoon, falling 5-0 to the nationally-ranked Engineers.
The Spartans (1-4) opened the game well, creating two early chances from
Ashlee Meczywor and
Jamie Ledoux, but both were turned aside by MIT's Ava Gillikin. But after fending off an onslaught of Engineer corners and shots, MIT (4-1-1) finally broke through with consecutive goals in the 33
rd and 34
th minutes to jump out to a 2-0 lead.
The Engineers controlled much of the remaining half, but a strong performance from freshman
Emma Ezzo in net held them to a two -goal lead entering the break. Making her debut start, the Vermont-native racked up nine saves against a relentless MIT attack.
The second half brought more of the same as the Engineers scored another pair of goals six minutes in to extend their lead to four before scoring their fifth and final goal in the 84
th minute, making it a 5-0 game and handing the Spartans the loss after a hard-fought 90 minutes.
Castleton will look to rebound Wednesday, September 14 when they host New England College in their final game before conference-play begins next weekend. Kickoff for their matchup with NEC is scheduled for 4 p.m.
