CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University women's lacrosse team scored seven first-quarter goals and never looked back, delivering a 15-3 win over Rhode Island College on Senior Day at Dave Wolk Stadium.
Kimberly McCarthy scored eight goals, the most in a single game by a Spartan since Brianna MacKay scored eight against UMaine-Farmington in 2016. The total was one shy of the program's single-game record of nine set by Marie Van Der Kar against Becker in 2009. McCarthy, MacKay and Van Der Kar are the only players in program history to reach the eight-goal threshold in a single game, with Van Der Kar doing so on three occasions.
McCarthy finished with nine points total, adding an assist as well as six ground balls and a caused turnover.
Lacey Greenamyre had a goal, three assists, 10 ground balls and five caused turnovers in addition to seven draw controls in the contest.
Tien Connor had a goal and two assists for three points, while
Ryanne Mix added two goals, 10 ground balls and four caused turnovers to the stat sheet.
Madelyn Cote had two points on a goal and an assist, while
Grace Sharkey scored her second goal of the season and added five ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Deena Jacunski also found the back of the net for Castleton.
Raven Payne made five saves on eight shots faced for Castleton, earning the win in goal. She also had three caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Olivia Carpenito and Amara Gibau were the only goal scorers for Rhode Island College, with Carpenito scoring twice. She also had nine ground balls and four caused turnovers. Gibau and Ashley Rewers had seven ground balls each, while Shannon O'Connell had six in addition to her 17 saves in goal.
The Spartans dominated the stat sheet, outshooting RIC 51-16 with a 32-8 margin on goal. RIC committed 51 turnovers to Castleton's 35, while Castleton had a 56-47 edge in ground balls. The Spartans were 21-of-32 on the clear, with RIC 16-of-35 clearing the ball. Castleton also won 15-of-22 draw controls. Castleton honored its five seniors prior to the contest:
Erlande Georges,
Matilda Gutke, Mix, Payne and Sharkey.
McCarthy scored her first of many on the day just over two minutes into play, before Connor doubled the lead to 2-0 less than a minute later. McCarthy then scored back-to-back goals just 25 seconds apart to complete her first-quarter hat-trick, making it 4-0 with 9:30 to play in the first. Cote scored Castleton's third goal in less than a minute, striking 18 seconds after McCarthy's latest goal, and Sharkey made it 6-0 with a goal with 4:10 left on the clock in the opening quarter. Jacunski rounded out the first-frame scoring with a goal in transition on a pass from
Annie Duprey.
The Anchorwomen responded with three unanswered goals in the second quarter, making it a 7-3 game as Carpenito scored twice and Gibau scored once within the opening six minutes of the second. Castleton rebounded with three goals of its own in the second to keep the lead at seven goals going into halftime, with Greenamyre, McCarthy and Mix scoring over a two-minute span to make it a 10-3 contest after 30 minutes.
The third quarter was all Castleton once again, with the Spartans outscoring RIC 3-0 in the frame. McCarthy notched all three of Castleton's goals in the contest, using assists from
Grace Pelletier, Greenamyre and Connor to push Castleton's lead to 13-3. The final frame was more of the same, with McCarthy netting her eighth goal of the day and 36th of the season before Mix capped the scoring with the Spartans' 15th and final goal, making it a 15-3 final.
