Baseball Shut Out at Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Castleton baseball team traveled in-state for a non-conference matchup with Middlebury College Wednesday afternoon, falling 6-0 to the Panthers on the road.

Stephen Coffey (0-3) made the start in a pitcher-by-committee approach for the Spartans (6-16-1, 1-8 LEC), allowing the game's opening two runs in the low-scoring affair. At the plate, Castleton tallied a season-low three hits.

After Middlebury (16-7, 4-1 NESCAC) took a 5-0 lead through two innings, the Spartans had their best opportunity of the game to score in the top of the third. Jesus Cardenas earned Castleton's first hit of the afternoon and advanced to second on a passed ball. A bunt from Ryan Lawrence moved him to third before a flyout from Reece de Castro left him stranded.

The Panthers' lead reached six after the fourth before both sides were held scoreless over the game's final five innings, handing the Spartans their first shutout loss of the season.

Castleton will look to bounced back Thursday, April 21 with a rematch against Skidmore College. The afternoon will kick off with a continuation of the teams' game from April 6 that was called due to darkness.
