Softball Swept by #6 Eastern Connecticut State

MANSFIELD, Conn. - The Castleton University softball team saw its four-game win streak come to an end Friday afternoon as sixth-ranked Eastern Connecticut State handed the Spartans their first conference losses at Clyde Washburn Field.

Eastern 9, Castleton 0

The Spartans (11-8, 4-2 LEC) stayed within two runs of the Warriors until the fourth inning, when the defending Little East Conference champions rallied for five runs. They would tack on an additional two in the seventh.

Despite being shutout, Castleton's eight hits fell only three shy to Eastern's total. Seven different Spartans earned at least one, while Allison Almond posted her fourth consecutive two-hit game. Hannah Mosher's hitting streak, which would come to end in Game 2, grew to nine games.

The Warriors (24-4, 7-1 LEC) were led by Alyssa Vilchez, who went 3-for-3, while Brooke Matyasovsky and Jillian Ciccarelli each drove in two runs.

Olivia Joy made the start in the circle and was pulled in the fourth inning. Olivia Bowen finished the frame before reigning LEC Rookie of the Week Jess Heinrichs pitched the final three innings with no earned runs. Eastern's Carley Stoker was credited the win after tossing four innings in relief.

Eastern 6, Castleton 1

Jamie Boyle's second-inning home run, her second of the season, wasn't enough for the Spartans against the perennial power. With Castleton serving as the home team, Eastern took a lead in the top of the first before Boyle's solo shot tied the game at 1-1. The Warriors responded, reclaiming the lead in the third with the first of five unanswered runs.

Boyle's home run was one of three Spartan hits - the others came from Heinrichs and Kate LaPan. Eastern collected eight hits against Castleton pitchers Katie Gallagher, Kylie Wright, and Heinrichs. Gallagher, who earned the win in 2021's upset of Eastern, started and logged three and a third. The Warriors used a combination of Alexis Michon and Vilchez in the circle.

Castleton is scheduled to take on Norwich in a non-conference doubleheader Monday, April 18 at Spartan Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
