CASTLETON, Vt. - The Castleton University women's lacrosse team dropped a neck-and-neck battle to Mount Saint Mary (N.Y.) by a final score of 13-9 Wednesday evening at Dave Wolk Stadium.
The back-and-forth contest featured four ties and three lead changes as Castleton (1-9, 0-2 LEC), which led by three at halftime, wasn't able to hang on against a tough Mount Saint Mary attack. The Knights claimed their first lead at the opening minutes of the fourth quarter with one of six unanswered goals.
Kimberly McCarthy led Castleton with three goals and one assist.
Lacey Greenamyre and
Maddie Brasser netted two apiece, while
Deena Jacunski and
Tien Connor rounded out the scoring. McCarthy also collected a team-high seven ground balls.
Colleen Sheridan notched four caused turnovers to lead the Spartan defense. Goalkeeper
Raven Payne registered 13 saves, one shy of tying her season-high.
Mount Saint Mary (7-4) was paced by Megan Shalvey, who scored five goals and added two assists. Karlie Ferrucci, who was one of three Knights to tally two goals, picked up seven ground balls and forced four turnovers to lead the team in both categories. Liz Petrellese matched Payne with 13 saves.
The Spartans scored the first two goals of the game as Connor and Brasser both found the back of the net in the opening three minutes. The Knights battled back to eventually tie the game at 2-2, before McCarthy scored her first of the day with less than a minute remaining in the first, putting Castleton back on top.
McCarthy scored the first of back-to-back goals as she and Jacunski put the Spartans up 5-3 midway through the second quarter. Goals by Greenamyre and Brasser would put Castleton ahead 7-4 by halftime.
The Knights opened the second half with back-to-back goals before McCarthy answered with her third of the contest. The two sides traded goals with Greenamyre eventually giving the hosts a two-goal lead. Six straight Mount Saint Mary tallies, beginning in the final seconds of the third quarter, would sink the Spartans.
Castleton is back in action Saturday, April 16 when it hosts Eastern Connecticut State for a Little East Conference matchup at 4 p.m.
