GALLOWAY, N.J. - The Castleton University baseball team salvaged a doubleheader split at Stockton University Saturday afternoon, dropping the opening game before bouncing back to win the second half of the twin bill in shutout fashion.
Stockton 4, Castleton 3
The Spartans (3-3) led 3-0 after the visitors' half of the second inning, but weren't able to hold off the Ospreys (3-1-1), who earned a walk-off win on Thomas Elgrim's single.
Castleton opened the scoring in the first inning as
Jackson Cardozo reached on a fielder's choice and scored
Reece de Castro. The Spartans would tack on two more in the second on a single by
Ryan Lawrence and an RBI groundout by
Hunter Perkins. Stockton chipped away with runs in the second and third before tying the game in the seventh and ultimately plating the winning run in the ninth.
Lawrence led the Spartans with a career-high three hits.
Evan Keegan also notched a multi-hit performance with a pair of singles. Castleton totaled seven hits to Stockton's eight.
Starting pitcher
Riley Orr dealt four innings, allowing just one earned run while collecting four strikeouts.
Max Olmsted struck out five in relief and surrendered two earned runs.
Castleton 2, Stockton 0
The Spartans earned a doubleheader split with a two-run sixth inning and stellar performances on the mound from
Zack Marlow and
Aubrey Ramey. Stockton mustered six hits against the two hurlers, but wasn't able to notch a run.
Lawrence started the key sixth inning with a bunt single, eventually scoring on a Perkins single. De Castro followed with another base-knock, advancing Perkins, who would score on a fielder's choice off the bat of Keegan.
Stockton strung together a pair of two-out hits in the bottom of the sixth, but Ramey slammed the door with a strikeout to end the inning and would set the Ospreys down in order in the seventh.
Lawrence, along with
Jake O'Brien, both notched two hits as Castleton equaled Stockton with six total. Ramey earned the win out of the bullpen with three innings of work, fanning three and allowing just a pair of hits.
Castleton is back in action Thursday, March 10, traveling to Newport News Apprentice School (Va.) for a doubleheader.
