NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Castleton baseball team continued their road trip with a matchup against The Apprentice School Wednesday afternoon, knocking in eleven runs en route to their first victory of the season.
Richard Walker (1-0) earned his first win on the year for the Spartans in this one. The graduate student gave up five hits and two runs in three innings of work, but Castleton's bats did more than enough to secure the Walker's win.
After a scoreless opening frame, the Spartans (1-1) put four runs on the board in the second, followed by another two in the third to take commanding big lead. The bottom half of Castleton's batting order in particular looked great at the plate, combining for six of the Spartans' nine hits and eight of the team's 11 runs, including
Addison Schaub's first career homer.
Aubrey Ramey entered the game in relief to start the fourth for Castleton and had a nearly perfect outing, allowing just one hit in three scoreless innings. The Spartans, meanwhile, continued to pile on the runs, adding five more to their tally in the sixth and seventh innings to make it an 11-2 game.
The Builders cut the deficit to seven with a two-run eighth inning before freshman
Adam Winchell closed out the game with a scoreless ninth inning to hand Castleton their first win of the year.
The Spartans are back in action Saturday, Feb. 19 where they will take on University of Mary Washington in their first double-header of the season. The first game in set for 11:00 a.m.
