ATTLEBORO, Mass. – For the second time this week, the Castleton women's hockey team took on the Johnson & Wales Wildcats. And for the second game, the Spartans walked away with a 3-2 victory thanks to scores from three different players.
Castleton (13-9-2, 11-6-1 NEHC) scored two goals in the opening period Saturday night to enter the first intermission up 2-0.
Samantha Lawler opened the day's scoring at the 16:17 mark, finishing off a feed from
Katie Nealon for her third goal of the season.
Then, as the clock was about to expire,
Courtney Gauthier got herself on the board and doubled the Spartans' lead right at the 20 minute mark. The score was Gauthier's 10
th of the season — the first time she has reached double-digit goals in a season in her career — and extends her goal streak to two games.
Johnson & Wales (10-14-1, 7-11-0 NEHC) closed the gap just over halfway into the second in an otherwise even period, meaning Castleton went into the third up 2-1.
The Wildcats would get called for checking two minutes into the final frame, and after coming up empty on their first six attempts,
Emily Harris added another goal to her tally with a powerplay score at the 3:12 mark.
Katherine Campoli controlled the puck in Johnson & Wales' zone before laying it off to Harris, who rifled a shot from the top of the circle and in for the goal.
Harris now ranks second on the team in goals at nine — scoring five goals over her last five games — to go along with her career-best eight assists.
The Wildcats would respond just over a minute later to once again make it a one-goal game, but the Spartans held their lead the remainder of the way, fighting off a brief six-on-five over the final 1:30 to seal the victory.
Freshman
Izabella Segui looked strong in net for the Spartans, racking up 27 saves, and now sits an impressive 4-0-1 in her five starts.
Next up for Castleton is a trip to Boston Saturday, Feb. 19 where they will take on UMass Boston in the quarterfinal round of the NEHC playoffs.
