Women's Hockey Blanks Rivier, 5-0

RUTLAND, Vt. – Five different scorers and air-tight defense propelled the Castleton women's hockey team to a 5-0 thumping of Rivier Friday afternoon.

Emily Harris put through her third goal of the season to score in back-to-back games. Emery Bonner, Samantha Lawler, and Brooke Greenwood also found the back of the net as well as Ellie Schliebener for the first time of her career. Bonner and Greenwood also picked up assists along with Moa Carlsson, Darby Palisi, Katie Nealon, and Megan Ward. Izabella Segui got the victory between the pipes, her third of the season and second career shutout. The Newington, Conn. product now boasts a 7-1-1 career record in goal.

The Spartans hammered the Rivier (2-6-2, 1-1-2 ECHA) goal with shots to start the contest, finding an opening in the seventh minute as Harris received a dish from Bonner and sent the puck past Rachel Symmes. With just under six minutes left in the first period, Carlsson brought possession into the Castleton attacking zone, finding Bonner as the LaSalle, Ontario native scored her second career goal to take a 2-0 lead.

Each squad got power play opportunities in the second stanza, the final occurring in the 19th minute via interference. The Spartans, using a four-forward look with Bonner to boot, won the ensuing faceoff as Palisi and Greenwood had shots saved but kicked it to Lawler for the finish.

After a delay of game penalty put the Spartans on power play to start the final 20, Symmes held firm with four saves to keep the gap at three goals for six minutes. However, it was Greenwood that snatched possession, turning around and slinging in the fourth score of the day with 14 minutes to play. The Spartans out-shot the Raiders 10-2 for the rest of the contest as the final shot on goal came off the stick of Schliebener after helpers from Nealon and Ward.

The Spartans compete for the Castleton Invitational title on Saturday, December 10 at 4 p.m.
