WORCESTER, Mass. — Using a late offensive push, the Castleton field hockey team upset second-seeded Worcester State, 3-0, in the Little East Conference Championship semifinal round.
The Spartans (13-7) utilized two goals from senior Kaitlin Bardellini and a third from Emily Harris. Harris and Kimberly McCarthy tallied assists while Haley Corlew, Amelia Wilson, and Genevieve Pitts also got shots on goal. Zoe Martin logged her fourth scoreless game between the posts, saving all 11 on-net shots.
The squads got off to a back-and-forth start in the opening period. Castleton got the contest's first four shots off before WSU (14-7) rallied to punish the Spartan goal. However, Martin was unrelenting and collected four saves in a matter of 64 seconds.
In the second quarter, the Spartans began to establish a rhythm yet were held without a goal due to four Madison Ferrara saves for the Lancers. Martin was just as effective once again as all three Lancer shots on goal were denied, keeping it scoreless at halftime.
The Lancers got off to a slow start but held the Spartans at bay, keeping possession in the midfield. That is, until the final minute of the third quarter when the Spartans charged toward the home half. McCarthy handled a drawn penalty corner and dished it to Harris who buried the day's first score with three ticks left.
Castleton struck again in a hurry, this time in the 47th minute as Harris found a seam to Bardellini at the top of the cage to extend the lead to 2-0. Trading drives, the Spartans and Lancers were still in a heated battle until the last minute. The green and white moved quickly with time winding down as Bardellini had a shot saved, got the rebound and buried the dagger with 11 seconds remaining.
In a flurry of celebrating Spartans, reality began to set in. Castleton is going back to the LEC Field Hockey Championship, the program's second appearance in four seasons. This time, it means being "road warriors" for back-to-back games, facing the number one seed for the crown.
The Spartans fight for the league title at Southern Maine on Saturday, November 5 for a 2 p.m. bout with the Huskies.
