Women’s Hockey Drops Midweek Contest to Wesleyan

RUTLAND, Vt. — The Castleton women's hockey team fell 2-1 to Wesleyan in its return to Spartan Arena Tuesday night.

The Spartans (4-4-0, 2-2-0 NEHC) ended the Cardinals' (4-1-0, 1-1-0) three-game shutout streak as Emery Bonner put through her first career goal in the final seconds. Izabella Segui posted 31 saves between the pipes, her highest mark of the season and second-best career total.

Wesleyan claimed an early lead from the stick of Brooke Keough on power play for her first score of the season with 5:15 left in the opening period. The Spartans struggled to manufacture offense, trailing in goal-bound shots 11-3 through the first 20 minutes.

The Cardinals further pressured Castleton's goal into the second stanza, but Segui posted a second ten-save period to keep it a one-score game. Bonner also blocked a pair of attempts as Megan Ward and Miranda Wheeler deflected one apiece.

A flurry of Spartan offense with eight shots on goal in the final period was matched by the Cardinals who fired 11 of their own. Wesleyan's Chiara Christie pushed the gap to 2-0 during a five-minute power play. Battling to the final horn, Darby Palisi kicked the puck in front of the goal as sophomore Bonner slapped in the night's final score.

The Spartans return to action Friday, December 2 for a NEHC contest against William Smith. Puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m.
